The Bloke I've just left decided to increase his herd so brough in 14 incalf heifers , the first day I was working had to pull a hiefer with bent legs which was very big but pulled thought, then went up to check the cows to find a 9 year old showing but wrongly took her into the shed and called in a nice lad from up the road 4 hours later and c-section later 1 dead calf. earlier one hiefer had just looked ill at lunch thought i'd give her a hour with food and water in a small pen in the field but went up while we were waitin for the vet and 1 dead hifer. the day after another heifer calved twins but both were coming at once by the time the we got them sorted them out the calved had died mainly because the hiefer was galloping around the field and wouldn't be catch untill she was knackered. 2 days later had 2 better calving with only having to help with one and that was gettin the bag off. I then went up to the back field 2 days later to find one hiefer pushing but my boss had said she'd calved over night (obs not) she had to be brought down, he put a pen up against a field which after 3 times with the jack he called to vet and she ran thought the fence onto slates cutting her legs open he then tied the by now very wobbie cow to the L200 and was agrueing with the vet about doing a c-section there in the end i got the tractor and slowly moved he around to a shipping cart and lay some tarpulin under her. she never stood up again and it took a week till my boss would take any notice of the stitchs that kept opening.
during that calving another hiefer calved from the same batch and tore open lucky the vet was there, the final hiefer out of that group rejected her calf but by the time she finally calved anyway the calf was brain dead again the field he'd put her in was rubbish to catch in and was 1.5 miles away from steading. anyway out of the 6 heifer from 1 batch we had 4 leaved and 2 live calves, i know this sound like a rant but i was wondering if everyone has luck like this or just me that month.
on the plus side did get 2 very lively twin hiefers out of a good cow alive. and the boss is now one stockman down and he ended up putting his own end to the show team for this year rant over sorry _________________ If found please return to brewery |

SOunds like a bit of mix of bnad lluck and a pooh boss! What kind of bull had the heiffers been to? Seems strange for so many to have problems like that. I had a bit of bad luck last time I was in charge of a cow calfing. My parents were away on holiday - all the cows except one had calved before they went. The one left was a quiet, oldish cow who had never had any problems before. Anyway, looked at her one morning and decided that it was likely to be that day. Kept looking and she stayed on her own but was mostly grazing. Neighbour came for a look. We watched for another couple of hours before deciding something wasn't quite right. Managed to take her into a pen in a separate wee paddock. Discovered she had twins but I couldn't sort them out so had to call vet out. She delivered them (with a bit of pulling from us blokes ) and all looked good. So, we put them both on for a suck, then untied cow and left her. When I went to look later, one calf was on its own lying down not moving muvh. Went to have a look abut the cow (always one of our calmest) charged me. A few attempts but couldn't get anywhere near. She charged as soon as I entered the field from any direction so couldn't usher her into the pen again. So, with the aid of a couple of neighbours again, we spent about two hours before finally managing to lassoo her! We would get the rope on but then she would turn and charge making it go slack - fun and games Calf was ok in the end but couldn't hepl thinking it was pretty bad luck to happen with the last quiet cow when my parents were away. _________________ It's the end of the world as we know it...
